Free Swag

Location: Nederland, CO 80466, USA
Mayor Joe Gierlach thinking about Free Swag
It is a great time to live in Nederland! It has been "blue-bird skiing" all season and I only have good news to report. There are a number of opportunities in the community that are coming to us free of charge:

Thanks to a grant from DRCOG and Boulder County, free RTD bus passes (EcoPasses) will be available to all Nederland residents for 2012. Sign-up days will be held at the library on Friday, Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After these days, there will be periodic sign-up events throughout the year at Town facilities and local events. These will be publicized on the Town’s Web site, Facebook, Twitter and in postings around town. There is enough grant money to pay for every Nederland man, woman and child to receive a free EcoPass, so I urge everyone to sign up. Anyone who signs up for an EcoPass on the library launch dates will be eligible to enter a drawing for a free Boulder County EnergySmart audit of their home, worth $125.

Boulder County residents are eligible for a new round of rebates for energy efficiency upgrades through the Boulder County EnergySmart program. Rebates of up to $1,000 for residents are available, depending on the project cost and potential energy savings. Larger rebates are available for businesses. This year, solar photovoltaic systems have been added as an eligible project for the program. For more information, visit  the EnergySmart website or call (303) 544-1000 for residents or (877) 505-6722 for businesses.

If you bring a current electric bill and an electric bill from one year ago to prove residency for your EcoPass, you can be a part of the Nederland Solar Garden. Contact Greg Ching at greg@solargardens.org (303) 835-3550 or go to this website. You can reduce your electric bill regardless if you are renting, own a home with no solar gain or own a business.

The Town is offering free dog licenses this year. (normally $5) The Board of Trustees waived the fee for 2012 in an effort to encourage all pet owners to license their dogs. The Police Department will issue the licenses. And don’t worry; pet owners won't be penalized for failing to license their dogs in years past. For more information, call the Police Department at (303) 258-3250.

Thanks to a grant from the state Division of Local Affairs (DOLA), the Town is replacing all old water meters with new remote-reading varieties. These will monitor water usage more accurately than the old meters and can identify a leak a home or business may have much more quickly than ever before. If you have not received your new meter, call Town Hall for an appointment. The new meters are installed free of charge.

Take advantage of all of these opportunities available to you. I'll either see you on the bus or the slopes.
