Bring Your Bike up the Canyon, Ride It After You Get Here.

John Fryar from the Longmont Times-Call ran this story in the Daily Camera: Boulder County Bars Cyclists from Certain Mountain Roads. The article describes the very real dangers with cycling in the area while repairs are being made and heavy equipment is being transported. The article also references a letter sent to the cycling community by the County Sheriff and Boulder County Transportation.

We were in a similar situation just two weeks ago, when we had to keep cars out of Boulder Canyon in order for CDOT to repair the roads for safe travel. Here's the message we gave the community: Can We Live for Two Weeks, Without Driving to Boulder? The plan worked, and Boulder Canyon was opened early: Ribbon Cut, Boulder Canyon Open, Full RTD Schedule Resumes.

So, for this cycling article, the key word of the headline is, 'certain' roads. There are certain roads you should stay away from, and other places where it is perfectly fine to ride. The problem is that the traffic situations and road conditions are changing all the time. My recommendation is to contact the local cyclist experts whether you ride a mountain bike or a road bike. There are two places in Ned to get this information: Happy Trails Bicycle Shop, and Tin Shed Sports. (click on the links for contact information)

Inside Boulder News comes to Nederland
Both bike shops have local experts that ride mountain and road bikes every day. They know the best places to go and can provide maps and information to make your cycling experience safe and enjoyable for any skill level. Both places have a community of riders that trade stories and offer the most up-to-date information on road and trail conditions.

The Nederland Visitor Center at 2 West First Street (dead center of town) is also a good place to stop in and get up-to-date information and maps even if you are not planning on biking. They know the best fall color spots too.

Do not try to bike on Boulder Canyon. Bring your bike up the canyon, stop in to one of our two bike shops and get the latest information. Then enjoy your ride after you get here.
(Better yet, take the RTD N Bus to Nederland with your bike and avoid driving altogether.)

Here is a story that Boulder Channel 8 ran, featuring the famous General Manager of Tin Shed Sports, Josh Harrod. As you can see, he is one of the guys that can give you the strait talk on the best places to ride on any given day:
